In an I/O by scan or by polling, a Master Driver is responsible for requesting from a device, from time to time, values from internal variables of an IED or system.

In normal conditions, this I/O mode is less efficient, because requests are performed with a device from time to time, sometimes receiving as a response the same previous value for each variable. This usually generates a large amount of I/O and bandwidth without effectively receiving a different value.
